Ricky Gervais reveals next project

Posted on 2007-12-22 by Tony

Ricky Gervais has unveiled his next project – a film set before the “sexual revolution”.

The Office star, who has also just finished filming a starring role in the Hollywood supernatural comedy Ghost Town, said: “I got back and me and Steve (Merchant) have just had our first meeting … and we’ve decided what to do next which is going to be a film.”

Gervais, 46, told Radio 5 Live: “We’re going to do a film next. It’s about a group of 20-somethings in 1970 in a small town where the sexual revolution didn’t hit and they’re going to get married and live next door to their mum.”

The comedian continued: “It’s (about) whether they do or whether they escape. We’ll probably film that in 2009 for release in 2010. So, a long time to wait.”

The comedy star’s last episode of Extras is being broadcast this Christmas. Gervais has also just played a supporting role in blockbuster Night At The Museum.

Gervais Lines Appear in latest Dictionary

Posted on 2007-09-20 by Tony

Brent

THE words of Ricky Gervais, the Simpsons and the Daily Record feature in the new Shorter Oxford English Dictionary. Gervais, who starred as David Brent in the BBC hit comedy The Office, appears twice. The line from The Office “Jennifer is talking of either downsizing Swindon branch or this branch” is used to explain “downsize”. The show also brings new meaning to the word “persuasion” in the phrase: “I was surprised (pleasantly I might add) to see you are of the female persuasion.”

The Simpsons are used to explain the US slang word “skinny”, meaning information, with the line: “I’m here today to give you the skinny on shoplifting.” The Record appears for our use of the word “bouncebackability”. The dictionary describes this as “the capacity to recover quickly from a setback”. A quote from a Record sports report is used to illustrate the word: “We then showed some true bouncebackability when we equalised.” The sixth edition of the dictionary, published today, contains more than 500,000 definitions, including 1300 new ones. The latest additions are dominated by words connected with scientific and environmental change, and the internet.

Expressions such as “Carbon emissions”, “Chelsea tractor” and “e-bomb” have been added since the last edition in 2002.

Ricky Gervais: My Career Is Not In Jeopardy

Posted on 2007-08-12 by Tony

British funnyman Ricky Gervais has dismissed reports his career is in jeopardy after he was allegedly booed offstage at the Concert for Diana.

The Office star took to the stage for a stand-up comedy segment at the memorial gig for late British royal Diana, Princess of Wales, at London’s Wembley stadium on 1 July (07), and reports later surfaced claiming Gervais had been heckled by the audience for a poor performance.

But the comedian insists the journalist got it all wrong and his career is more successful than ever before.

He tells British radio station Heart FM, “After the Diana concert there was one guy – who works for a tabloid – and he wrote that the crowd booed… they didn’t boo, they loved it.

“People love it when something goes wrong and I was standing there and they demanded I do ‘the robot dance’ and it was funny.

“But this guy wrote, ‘He’s rubbish, everything he’s ever done is rubbish and it’s all over for him.’ “That week I got nominated for four Emmy Awards, sold 100,000 Dvds of Extras and signed up for two Hollywood movies. So bring on the backlash… I want him writing about me every day.”

Speaking about a possible comeback, Groening said: “We loved having him on the show. Whatever he wants to do – we’d love to have his character return. Or he could do something completely new.”

The cartoonist added: “It was such a thrill for us to have him – the main reason we have guests on is because we’re fans.”

Extras star Gervais wrote and starred in an episode of the animation comedy, titled ‘Homer Simpson, This Is Your Wife’. The episode which aired in 2006 involved a wife swap scenario, with Gervais’ character moving in with Marge Simpson.

About Ricky Gervais

May 28th, 2008 Posted 7:30 am

A man of many talents, Mr Gervais has become one of the most successful UK comedians earning respect and recognition the world over. Born in Reading, he graduated with a degree in Philosophy, was part of a band called Seona dancing, went onto presenting on the radio before meeting Steve Merchant who became his co-writer developing the award winning sitcom The Office.

Soon after he went on a stand up tour with ‘Animals’ followed by ‘Politics’ and then released his second sitcom ‘Extras’, with the second series on the way. Somewhere along the way he picked up the spherical headed Karl Pilkington and released The Ricky Gervais Show Podcast, currently running its second series.

Ricky Gervais Timeline

Unlike me, Mr Gervais cannot have his life summed up in 2 paragraphs so rather then write out a biography ( there are many out there ), I’ve decided on producing a timeline of his life so far. The detail and events covered will of course increase as I develop it and have also included extra notes here and there for your enjoyment.

June 25, 1961
Ricky enters the world.
1979
Enrolls at University College London choosing to study Biology. Soon after changing his mind to Philosophy where he graduated with a 2:2.
1982
Meets Jane Fallon, a british television producer of programs such as ‘Teachers’ and ‘This Life’. The couple remain together to this day.
1985
Despite Seaona Dancing breaking up the previous year, ‘More To Lose’ becomes a major hit in the Philippines.
1996
Joins XFM radio.
1998
The Capital Radio group takes over XFM radio, making Ricky Gervais redundant.
September 1998
‘Comedy Labs’ a Channel 4 project presents a one-off Gervais show entitled ‘Golden Years’ which followed ‘Clive Meadows’ a dedicated David Bowie fan attempting to become a lookalike and perform as his idol. I can’t see why this character could remind us of Mr Gervais ….
November 2001
Returns to XFM radio with a Saturday afternoon show that runs through to January 2004, with the occasional break lasting 103 months between each series. Be sure to check the Audio section for a download of the entire XFM archive.
2003
The Observer lists Gervais asone of the 50 funniest acts in British Comedy, with his funniest moment chosen as being ‘Training Day’, an episode of The Office where he fetches his guitar from home and sings his own composed music such as Freelove Freeway, which was later recorded with Noel Gallagher as a B-side to ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Know’.
December 2003
The Christmas Specials of The Office are aired on BBC1, tying up the show and the last we would see of the pathetic but amazing character that is Brent. This documentated life for Brent after being made redundant from posistion of manager at Wernam Hogg, struggling as a salesman while making the very frequent and equally very unwanted visits to the paper merchants.
28 May 2005
Now with Karl Pilkington and Stephen Merchant, he returns for a new show on XFM.
December 29 2006
Defeats Grant Bovey in a pre-recorded boxing match for chairty broadcast on BBC2. Watched on by cast members from The Office along with his girlfriend Jane, the victory earnt him £5000 for his chosen charity, Macmillan Nurses. Trained by Frank and Eugene Maloney, Gervais said he later winced at his “gruesome” performance.
March 26 2006
The Gervais written Simpsons episode ‘Homer, This Is Your Wife’ is broadcast on FOX TV, making him the first british person ever to write an episode of the show.
March 30 2007
Gervais convinces John Travolta to appear in the upcoming Extras specials and seals the deal with a dancing showdown where that dance is performed once again and Travolta shows he still has that Saturday night fever when both appeared on the Johnathon Ross show.
July 2007

A new video featuring Gervais and Stephen Merchant is released online announcing the Extras final episode script is complete and go from discussing the internet before Ricky responds to critics comments of him slacking off, which he does in his own hilariously insulting manner. The video can be watched on YouTube, check it out you ******* ****.

Karl Pilkington Head

Thousands across the globe are in serious debate over whether what we have before
us is the off-spring of a official size bowling ball and stressed chimpanzee or the
funniest person since … well Ricky Gervais. Karl Pilkington, originally from Manchester
and having burnt 33 candles, lived a less then normal childhood with a variety of
events and personalities shaping the being we all know and love.

Having your parents told you will “never be a high flyer”, going on caravan holidays
during term time due to it being cheaper and knowing a lady who rode a tricycle with a
basket attached to the rear can have a negative effect on one’s state of mind. Add that
to having a pet magpie (who went by the name of Maggie) who pecked him in the head,
disappointingly receiving a ZX81 when he longed for the Spectrum ZX and seeing the
genitalia of his Auntie Nora (which he claims resembles a split tennis ball) leaves
us with maybe not a reason but certainly an excuse for the character he has become.

Karl started his working life as a paper boy, cheating death when he fell from his
bedroom window after trying to make a sly escape when mummy Pilkington locked him in due
to the harsh weather conditions. In his own words “I think if you’re good at a job you
enjoy it more and I was really good at delivering papers.” His first proper job was
working in a printers at the age of 15, where he claims working a 24 hour shift pressing
CD’s for a band lead to the loss of his hair, not forgetting the substantial knowledge
also playing a role here. His next job role was head of production at XFM, a London radio
station and it is here where he met his long term girlfriend Suzanne. What brought them
together? Suzanne at a coffee vending machine needed 10p and it is Karl, her nude headed
knight in shining armour who came to the rescue and they have been together ever since.

Mr Pilkington met Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant when the pair returned to XFM and
was lumped with Karl as their producer. Originally never heard from, it wasn’t long till the
amusing and naive comments and opinions from the fella made it on air and it was here the gem
was discovered and later made part of the team on the Ricky Gervais Show Podcasts.

So what makes Karl Pilkington the genius that he is? Few have questioned whether this is a
character made up and performed but Ricky Gervais commented on this stating that it took years
to write the hours of material found within The Office and Extras, a character scripted this well
would not have been wasted on a poxy radio station (speaking of XFM). We all know a Karl character,
or did so until the last year of secondary school and here we have a rare example of such an
individual being brought into the limelight. Never meaning to ‘have a go’ but always seems to,
be sure to pre-order his upcoming book ‘The World of Karl Pilkington’
from Amazon UK
or Amazon.com
if you’re not from around these here parts.

Seona Dancing

Gervais in Seona Dancing

Before Ricky was singing songs he wrote in The Office, he was singing songs he wrote in a 2 piece band in the 80′s who went by the name of Seona Dancing. Pronounced ‘Shaw-Na’ the New Romantic Pop group consisted of himself and keyboardist Bill Macrae, who had the role of composing the music using mainly synthesizers.

Sadly the group had little success, releasing only two singles ‘More To Lose’ in 1983 which reached number 70 on the Billboard charts and ‘Bitter Heart’ which gained little popularity and lead to the group disbanding in a year later. Surprisingly the jumpy but dreamy track ‘More To Lose’ became a huge hit in the Philippians after radio station DWRT-FM in Manila began playing the track under the fictitious name ‘Fade’ by a band called ‘Medium’. Why the changed name? The DJ never wanted anyone else to be able to find and play the track, making it exclusive to his show.

Ricky Gervais has never spoken of the band, though perhaps a reference was made in the ‘Training Day’ episode of The Office in which he speaks of ‘Forgone Conclusion’ where he describes himself as the singer/songwriter. Was ‘Freelove Freeway’ written in the Seona Dancing days? We may never find out but the Noel Remix of the track was released as the B-side to the gimmick track ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now’ showing that he never truely put music behind him.

Although only two tracks were released (both contained a B-Side), a 17 track demo tape was made though as of yet none of the tracks have leaked leaving most unheard. Still known in retro pop circles but forgotten or perhaps never heard of by most, the band has a new sparked interest since the fame of Mr Gervais. As reunion is pretty much out of the question, with a clip presented on Room 101 leaving him in a state of speechless embarrassment. As for Bill Macrae, the friends drifted apart into the late 80′s where he went onto work at a record shop and has never since entered the public eye.
